Rangers fan-favourite Ally McCoist has admitted that Celtic remain superior to the Ibrox club at this moment in time.
Steven Gerrard’s side have made seven summer signings and we’re not even into July. It’s a clear sign from the Ibrox club that they know they still need a revamp in order to challenge Neil Lennon’s eight-in-a-row champions.
This comes after a similar overhaul last year in which Gerrard totally overhauled the playing squad at Ibrox. This has predictably led to Rangers fans getting a tad overexcited about ending Celtic’s domestic dominance.

But even Ibrox hero McCoist is advising Rangers to get more work done before they can lay claim to the title. Speaking in the Scottish Sun, McCoist admitted that Rangers need more to compete with Celtic still.
“Rangers are two or three signings away from challenging Celtic for the title. The gap closed last year, but Celtic are favourites to win and understandably so.”
Ally McCoist speaking sense, but forgetting one thing
McCoist is right in that Rangers need more to challenge Celtic. But what he’s also assuming is that every player Rangers have signed will sort out their problems.
He’s also forgetful of the fact that Celtic are still to do the majority of their own work this summer. We’ve now signed one centre-back and more armoury for the midfield. There is still clear work to be done, but Celtic don’t appear to be standing still.

With £7million being splashed out on the likes of Christopher Jullien (Scottish Sun), Celtic have signalled their intent to invest this summer. Granted, there is no guarantee that Jullien will work out or indeed any of Lennon’s signings either. But Celtic are taking the route of trying to speculate to accumulate, and the more money we spend, the more likely it is that we’ll stroll ahead of Rangers once more.
Things are getting desperate for them
It’s getting so desperate at Ibrox these days. Any small sign of hope they can clutch is being grabbed without a moment of hesitation. This is a club whose supporters were nearly celebrating Lennon’s appointment at Celtic as a title-win. A man who perhaps has one of the most impressive records against Rangers in the league. A man who has now won four titles with the Hoops in five years.

Lennon may not have been many Celtic supporters’ first-choice. But at the end of the day, he’s still a very successful football manager with a proven track record in Scotland.
So whilst McCoist is right to say Celtic remain ahead as it currently stands, it could still take a lot more than two or three new signings come the end of the summer.
