Ally McCoist gets ‘brutally honest’ about Celtic after Glasgow Derby win

Three days in and the magnitude of Celtic’s win over Rangers on Saturday is really starting to hit home with the pundits in the Scottish game.

We discussed yesterday how Kenny Miller was finding it hard to praise Matt O’Riley after his performances this season and on Saturday.

Graeme Souness also got in on the act with his verdict on John Lundstram’s red card and Alistair Johnston’s part in that.

And we also discussed Ally McCoist not having ‘sour grapes’ about Celtic’s win that effectively won the title.

McCoist admits Celtic dominance

And it’s Ally McCoist who’s up again this morning after being asked about Graeme Souness’ claim that Celtic are not as far ahead of Rangers as some people may think.

Whilst McCoist agrees that Celtic are ahead, there was still a tinge of those sour grapes in his reply that the former Rangers striker denies being there.

McCoist said [talkSPORT], “Celtic are slightly better. Two bad bunches to tell you the truth. They are two bang-average sides. As poor an Old F*rm I’ve seen in a long time to tell you the truth.

“And Celtic are slightly better. I read somewhere that since Philippe Clement’s come in, Rangers have actually taken more points than Celtic in the league.

“But no, I’m going to be brutally honest and just say Celtic have got the edge over Rangers at this moment in time.

“But in the grand scheme of things, very, very average sides.”

Look, at the end of the day, when people look back at the record books they are not going to survey Celtic’s title win and do a deep dive on the state of the squads.

All they will see is that this was Celtic’s third title in a row and even at our weakest, Rangers still couldn’t stop us.

Did McCoist do that during Rangers’ nine-in-a-row run when Celtic were going through one of the worst periods in their history?

Of course not. Because no one really cares. Just like no one will care on Saturday afternoon when Callum McGregor leads the team out on the final game of the season to wrap up the title.

And, just to counter McCoist’s claim. Are players like Callum McGregor, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi bang average?

Absolutely not. Injuries hampered Celtic’s title progress this season. Just wait till Brendan Rodgers gets to strengthen the team this summer and gets to work with a fully fit squad next season.

I don’t think we will see anything ‘bang average’ then.
