Ally McCoist is ‘devastated’ as he rates Rangers chances of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title

Celtic’s League Cup win over Hibs takes a backseat now after Ally McCoist shares why he is ‘devastated’ after rating Rangers’ chances to win the league this season.

The former Rangers striker was asked for his view on what is going on at his old club and was asked by Jeff Stelling what was the best he could hope for in terms of winning the league.

Whilst McCoist said he was an ‘eternal optimist’ he did admit that he is not holding out much hope for as he said Rangers are not good enough to win the title.

McCoist says ‘unbelievably poor’ Rangers are ‘miles off’ challenging Celtic

Ally McCoist went on a rant and took aim at his old club and sounding exasperated, the radio pundit said ‘it breaks his heart’ to admit how far behind Rangers are off of Celtic.

McCoist told the listeners and Jeff Stelling on talkSPORT, “Rangers are short at this moment in time, Jeff. There is no way that Rangers could handle the Champions League.

“I am genuinely devastated at what’s going on at my club. I’m looking at it, the recruitment in recent years has been unbelievably poor. They’ve given money to people who spend, quite frankly, that haven’t spent it very wisely at all.

“At the top level, we’re playing home games at Hampden. On the pitch, we’re miles off it at this moment in time, miles.

“And it breaks my heart to say it but we’re miles off it and off the pitch as well we have got an unbelievable amount of work to do.

“The fact of the matter is the squad at this moment in time is, sadly, not good enough to win the league.

“The best we can hope for is to win it, and I am the eternal optimist but if Rangers won the league this year, it would be one of the greatest league triumphs ever.”

Celtic currently sit top of the league on six points just a single point ahead of their rivals and with 36 games of the season to go, there will be no one at the club believing that the title will be won already.

League duty resumes this Sunday with a difficult away trip to St Mirren and then after that, Rangers come visiting in the first Glasgow Derby of the season.

Should Celtic win that game then it will solidify their position at the top of the league and whilst no medals are handed out in August (or September) the Parkhead club will become massive favourites to win their fourth title in a row.
