Ally McCoist leaps to Celtic defence after Sam Allardyce comments

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has defended Celtic’s trophy-success and claimed that Scottish football isn’t easy.

Celtic have won nine consecutive domestic trophies and are going for their 10th next weekend when they face Rangers at Hampden Park in the Betfred Cup final. It’s been an unprecedented era of dominance from the Hoops, but not everyone seems to have an admiration for it.

Sam Allardyce said on TalkSPORT (25/11/ 06:00) yesterday morning that “We (managers) can all go to Celtic and win trophies”. It was an extremely poor remark from the veteran tactician, who hardly has much of a trophy-laden career himself.

McCoist, meanwhile, was the Rangers manager for three years and managed to win the Third Division and League One, before he failed to get them out of the Championship. Speaking in the Daily Record, he’s been defending Scottish football and the integrity of Celtic’s dominance.

“No it’s not (easy). You have to say Brendan Rodgers was fantastic at Celtic. Absolutely fantastic so clearly not a doddle.

“I know what Sam is saying but it’s not easy to go and win silverware anywhere. I don’t agree with that.”

McCoist spot on

Say what you want about McCoist, but he’s always willing to stand up for the Scottish game. Even he, as a Rangers icon, can recognise the magnitude of the achievements that Celtic have gained over the last few years.

It’s difficult to shake the notion that the likes of Allardyce would view things differently if it was Steven Gerrard’s Rangers who were successful. For some reason, there’s this perceived idea that Scottish football is just a case of turning up for Celtic and being gift-wrapped trophies.

But look at the enormity of some of Celtic’s stats in recent years. The invincible season can’t be underestimated, whilst we’re on a run of 30 consecutive domestic cup wins. Not one of those has gone to a replay either. That’s almost a full season worth of fixtures.

There’s more to this than just stumbling our way to titles and trophies. The consistency Celtic have to show in order to stay as dominant as we are has been underestimated by Allardyce.

Of course, he’s not the only one to make dismissive remarks about Scottish football in the past. Former Chelsea man Jason Cundy described the Premiership as an “awful league” back when Brendan Rodgers was the manager (Scottish Sun).

Meanwhile, you have the likes of TalkSPORT host Adrian Durham consistently and bizarrely having random pops at Celtic (TalkSPORT Twitter).

So it’s good to see McCoist standing up for how difficult this domination of Scottish football has been. Celtic deserved more respect than Allardyce dished out.
