Ally McCoist stunned by bizarre suggestion involving Celtic & Rangers, uses Leeds United as an example

Ally McCoist has played down a suggestion from Graeme Souness that Celtic and Rangers could ground share if they moved to the English Premier League.

This has been long mooted and is a topic that will be forever discussed, but in reality, it will probably never happen, but never say never in football because it is a crazy game and money talks.

Celtic and Rangers are Scotland’s biggest clubs, without them, the Scottish Premiership and the whole system would just collapse.

Plus, as Ally McCoist pointed out, for the duo to enter the English pyramid, you will need the approval of the teams currently in it and he feels clubs like Leeds United would vote against it, as he told talkSPORT.

Look, there is no doubt that having Celtic in the Premier League would be hugely exciting and it would take the club up another level.

Brendan Rodgers has just witnessed the team produce two abject transfer windows, with the money in England, all those top players Celtic fans dream of buying would come in.

But the thought of Celtic ground sharing with their Glasgow rivals was quickly and rightfully shut down by Ally McCoist.

Celtic and Rangers ground share

“Come on Graeme,” responded McCoist. “I mean do us a favour, Graeme.

“Who would vote for it? I mean, you’re certainly not going to get Burnley or Sheffield United or indeed Leeds, at this moment in time, they’re not going to vote for it. So that’s the biggest problem.

“How they would get on is interesting as well. It would take them three or four years because I am going to be brutally honest, they are two bang-average Rangers and Celtic teams, at this moment in time.

“I’ve seen some good ones, I’ve seen some indifferent ones, both teams, right now, I think I am being fair, are average at this moment in time. We played in some good Rangers and Celtic teams who could compete with the English. We knocked Leeds out and Celtic had some great runs and beat Blackburn and Liverpool.

“It’s due to finance, finance is 99 per cent of it here, that’s a million miles away. If they did get in the leagues it would take them a while. But with the support they’ve got, if they could survive and take their time getting up there, they would be fine. But I don’t see it happening because there are too many obstacles.”

Scottish football needs a boost

There is no doubt, like other major top leagues, a boost of money would certainly take the Scottish league up a level, and it’s needed.

It’s unfortunate, but that’s how football is run in today’s game. The big spotlights are where the money is.

Just look at the Saudi Pro League, it’s now attracting the top players across the world by offering huge sums of money.

The Premier League can maintain itself as the best league in the world by constantly pumping billions into it.
