Ally McCoist’s strange Celtic fan claim as he tells Jeff Stelling about how the ‘vast majority’ feel about him

Many Celtic fans can take or leave Ally McCoist.

The former Rangers striker was despised by Celtic supporters in his playing days but is a very popular voice in England.

McCoist now has multiple roles in the broadcast media covering Champions League football and English football on talkSPORT.

But it was McCoist’s time at Rangers that made Jeff Stelling ask him how he gets on with Celtic fans now that he has been out of the game for over 24 years.

Ally McCoist admits he has an ‘absolutely fine relationship’ with Celtic fans

It’s fair to assume that as a Rangers player, McCoist was universally disliked by Celtic supporters. That’s how rivalry works.

But now, 24 years after retiring as a player and ten years after leaving Ibrox as a manager, McCoist admits how he gets on with Celtic supporters now.

Stelling asked McCoist on talkSPORT, “You must have been on flights and trains with Celtic fans. Are they okay with you?

McCoist: “Oh, brand new. Absolutely brand new. I think the vast, vast majority of them just appreciated the fact when I scored against Celtic, I just wanted to celebrate with the Rangers fans.

“And that’s the way it should be. There’ll be occasions where you wind people up. I get that’s part and parcel of it, but generally speaking, absolutely fine relationship with the vast majority of Celtic fans.

“That switchboard is going to light up in two minutes. But no, it’s fine. You can’t beat it. That’s one of the things I miss.

“That atmosphere last night at Elland Road, dear me. You go to some of the stadiums, great stadiums, I mean, European nights in Glasgow and things like that, is absolutely incredible.”

Whilst I don’t doubt that many Celtic fans can take to McCoist better now than when he was a Rangers player, did many ‘appreciate’ the fact he only wanted to celebrate with his own support after scoring against Celtic?

That simply doesn’t add up as that would be the furthest thing from any Celtic supporters mind as they watched him wheel away celebrating a Rangers goal.

The pain Celtic have caused Ally McCoist

Celtic have caused McCoist plenty of pain over the years, especially since 2012.

Since that memorable year, Celtic have won all but one league title, seven Scottish Cups and eight League Cups.

Celtic are officially Scotland’s most successful club and have won more trebles now than any other club in the history of football.

If Celtic fans really did appreciate McCoist celebrating with the Rangers support, they certainly appreciate the fact he has had nothing much to cheer about for the vast majority of the last 13 years.
