Analyst finds similarities between Celtic and PSG

Very few people would say Celtic have a lot in common with PSG. Perhaps the only thing is that both sides are perennial title winners. Celtic have won the last eight Scottish titles in a row, whilst PSG have won the six of the last seven French titles.

One man who does think that the clubs have something in common is Nigel Parson, an analyst at financial services firm Canaccord. He thanks that the Hoops and PSG share some similarities.

“There is huge asset price inflation for sporting franchisees at the moment. Celtic is a big fish in a small pond. Its fanbase is enormous and its stadium is filled week after week” Parson said, as reported by the Standard.

“I don’t think the club is any different to Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain, which dominates domestically and plays in the Champions League.”

Whilst Celtic may play in the Champions League their participation is not guaranteed every year, unlike PSG. In fact for the last two seasons, the Hoops have failed to make the group stages of the competition.

Also, as long as Celtic are playing in Scotland, it is unlikely that they will be bought like PSG were. Their owners would have been attracted by the chance to build a team from France into a Champions League powerhouse. That isn’t likely to happen in Scotland.

It should also be remembered that when the teams met in the Champions League group stages two years ago, the aggregate score was 12-1 to PSG in the two games. Celtic have a way to go to get to PSG’s level on or off the pitch, to put it mildly.

The only way Celtic could compete with teams like PSG would be if the Hoops moved to England. The chances of that happening would be considered to be slim to none.

Will Celtic be the subject of a takeover sometime in the future? Perhaps. That may depend on any changes that come into European football in the next few seasons. For now though, the only thing that Celtic and PSG have in common is that both teams win lots of domestic trophies. That situation isn’t likely to change any time soon.
