The Celtic first-team should have Andy Gray’s latest comments plastered on to the dressing room wall.
Neil Lennon’s men may be going into the new season as eight-in-a-row league champions and nine-in-a-row cup winners but it seems like it’s all going to crash down very soon – according to the disgraced TV pundit.
And what makes Gray’s out-of-touch comments even more baffling is that they seem to have been influenced by a meeting with Steven Gerrard. The Daily Record have some quotes from the former Wolves striker who seems keen to get one over Celtic.
“No, it’s not too early to judge”, Gray said. “Rangers are 100 per cent ready to make a proper title challenge this season.
“Steven knows it too having talked to him about it after the game. He’s absolutely convinced there’s a title in them and that it can be this year.
“He also said there are a couple of really young kids he’s going to blood over the next few weeks. He says he likes them a lot and wants them involved with the first team which is great news.
“But there is definitely a title push to come. When you think, had Rangers beaten the teams they should have beaten last season – and didn’t drop so many stupid points – then they probably would have won the title this year.”
Gray’s comments are disrespectful to Celtic
The final point Gray makes is one that is often heard from across Govan way. Rangers fans seem to be convinced that they lost last season’s title rather than Celtic winning it. They cite defeats throughout the season as reasons for their trophyless campaign rather than the fact they simply fell short of a better team.
The reality of last season’s campaign is that Celtic lost five big away fixtures and still won the league at a canter. Rangers (twice), Hearts, Kilmarnock and Hibernian all inflicted defeats on us while Livingston (twice), Motherwell and St. Mirren all got surprise draws.
The fact we still won the league by the same margin as the previous season says a lot. Going by Gray’s logic it is Celtic fans who should be upset we didn’t win the league by 18 points had we not dropped silly points.
Celtic are still the team to catch, despite all of the noise from across the city. That will only change if Rangers ever topple us.
