Andy Robertson has admitted that he was thinking of the late Celtic captain Billy McNeill when he lifted the Champions League trophy as a Liverpool player.
Robertson, a former Hoops youth player, starred for Liverpool in their 2-0 victory over Tottenham. He has revealed that a famous photo of McNeill with the old European Cup was an inspiration to him.
“So iconic”
“The picture of Billy is so iconic, obviously it is outside Parkhead and it is everywhere” he said, as reported by the Herald.
“My picture won’t go as big as his, but it was still a special moment to get my hands on the trophy he lifted.”
It is good to see that McNeill is held in such esteem by one of this generation’s best Scottish footballers.
The one that got away
Robertson could go down as the ultimate case of the ‘one that got away’ for Celtic. He has gone from leaving the Hoops as a youngster to becoming one of the best left-backs in the world.
Would Robertson have become the player he is now if he had made it at Celtic? Who knows. It has to be said though that it was probably the best thing to happen to his career overall.
Still, it is good to see that the player still feels an emotional tie to one of Celtic’s biggest icons.
