Ange brilliantly rips apart today's derby narrative surrounding Celtic

Ange Postecoglou has ripped into the idea that Celtic only need a point to preserve their advantage at the top of the Premiership this afternoon.

Much of the talk surrounding today’s Glasgow derby clash against Rangers revolves around the idea that our rivals need to win. That even a point for Celtic will keep them in control. After all, we would still be 3 points clear with a heavily superior goal difference.

With the final Glasgow derby also being played at Celtic Park, it makes the rest of the season look ideal for us. We would certainly be in a much better position than Rangers.

However, this isn’t talk that Postecoglou has been comfortable entertaining. In fact, he totally ripped the idea apart as he outlined how he’s going to approach Ibrox today. Speaking via the Scottish Mail on Sunday [print edition, 03/04, page 159], Ange said:

“I guess the beauty of playing football the way we do is that we try and win every game. Usually when you’re chasing a result you want the win, and our team is designed to do that every week anyway. That won’t change.

“If we started thinking differently or changing our approach to try and get a result, then that’s when we fall into a trap. Whenever I hear people say they are going to play for a draw, I just don’t understand it.

“Because there is no foolproof system out there that is going to guarantee you anything. Our best bet and our best chance of success is to play our football because that is why we are in the position we are right now.”

A draw wouldn’t be the worst result for Celtic, but it’s not something we’re playing for

You can’t deny that a draw would suit Celtic more than Rangers. That’s just fact and it can’t be argued with. It’s a result that would keep us well in control of the title race. That’s all many are asking for coming out of today.

However, Ange is quite right to outline his own thoughts on that being the mindset. He’s right to dismiss the idea that a draw is something we should be playing for. The only route to a draw is if it comes as a result of us putting 110% into getting a win. Only then can we reflect a draw in a positive light.

Celtic fans don’t want to tune in this afternoon and see their side sit back. They don’t want to see us “frustrate” Rangers and look to try and get to full-time unscathed. This team just isn’t setup for an approach like that. An anti-football approach if you will.

Celtic have gone to places like Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen this season and have shown their clinical touch. They’ve shown a determination not to sit back and soak up the pressure.

The truth is that if you go down that route then you need plenty of luck to take anything from a game. It sets up a pattern of play that can’t be easy to play against and certainly isn’t easy to watch. The best defensive moves we can make today is by showing our teeth up the other end.

We’ll see what the day brings in terms of the result. But as for how we tackle it? Only a victory will do in the minds of Ange and his Celtic players.
