Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has updated supporters on the situation of Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston today.

Both attackers were part of Postecoglou’s pre-season squad and featured in friendlies for the club.

However, both were forced off during a match against Bristol City and haven’t played since.

The news on both was mixed today. Karamoko looks to be out for the foreseeable future while Johnston is closing in on a return.

Speaking to journalists this afternoon, Postecoglou explained [Celtic YouTube]: “Both have been really unfortunate with their injuries.

“Karamoko is a bit of a long-term one, so he’s a fair bit away in terms of rehab.

“Mikey is getting closer. He’s working hard at training. We’re hoping post-international break he’ll be able to join the group. We’ve got to be a little bit careful with him.

“Both are wingers, both are exciting players that I think will fit into the style of play. So I’m keen to have them back involved. But we’ve got to be guided by the medical team because we want them back playing regularly rather than having any more setbacks.”

At this stage, it’s unlikely that either would be down as regular starters for the Bhoys. However, both do add depth to the manager’s attacking options.

There’s still hope one, or both, of them, can make it at Celtic.

Injuries have been a real issue for Johnston though and this summer’s setback was the last thing he needed. He has to prove he has the capability to be available on a regular basis for the Bhoys.

Dembele meanwhile has an expiring contract and this season was always marked as a crucial one for his Celtic development. The injury has clearly impacted that in a big way. Hopefully, he can get back to fitness and show why he’s worth a new long-term deal.
