Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou hasn’t shied away from the disappointment supporters felt after Wednesday night’s match against RB Leipzig but has insisted performing at that level will take time to get right.
The Bhoys were defeated 3-1 in Germany and sit bottom of Group F with three matches to play in the section. While two of them are at home, there are understandable concerns about Celtic’s ability to pick up significant points.
Asked by 67 Hail Hail’s Hamish Carton about the reaction of fans in the wake of the defeat and if this journey will require patience, Postecoglou said today: “I’m no miracle worker. It’s not like I’ve taken over a club that has consistently been in the semi-finals of the Champions League. It does take time. We’re not the only club in that situation. There are a lot of clubs like us who want to make an impact in the Champions League but know there is a process to getting there.

“The clubs of our size that eventually get there, it takes time. I’d love to fast-track the process. That’s what I’m trying to do. I think the way you make greater progress is by being brave and bold, not looking to survive.
“Our fans were unbelievable again. It felt like we were in Glasgow as we left the hotel. It was just amazing. They create such a good atmosphere wherever they go. They supported us unbelievably. They’re disappointed, I know, with the outcome, but that’s just fans being passionate and caring. I have no issue with that.
“I think they also acknowledge that we didn’t go to Leipzig to try and survive. We went there to try and create something special. We didn’t, but I think, for the most part, if people see endeavour, I think they’re encouraged by that. It was right we acknowledge them at the end – we’ve got a Champions League support, we just need to become a Champions League team.”
Typically rousing stuff from the Celtic manager, I’m sure you’ll agree. One thing he never does is shirk responsibility. He fully understands how many of us felt about Wednesday night, but he is always logical and fair about what the expectations of his team should be.
Postecoglou seems to be in this for the long haul. He has an end goal in sight for him at Celtic and it’s likely far beyond what we’re currently seeing in Group F.
Nonetheless, the next two home matches are a fantastic opportunity to show the progress is real and not just theoretical. Everyone will be feeling a lot better if we pick up good points against Shakhtar and Leipzig.
