Ange Postecoglou contradicts Celtic answer with ‘no comment’ reply to Tottenham question

Ange Postecoglou has seemingly ruled himself out of the running for the Celtic job in the summer.

He did this on the basis that he ‘doesn’t go back’ to previous clubs, and hasn’t done so at any point in his career.

Postecoglou has been sacked from his last two roles, both of which were in the Premier League. The first of those, at Tottenham, was in unique circumstances, given that he delivered a historic Europa League trophy in his final game in charge.

Since the Aussie’s departure, Tottenham have only become more of a mess – and he seems to be open to breaking his own rule to return to North London.

Was Ange Postecoglou disrespected in England?

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham reply contradicts Celtic answer

After Tottenham’s disastrous Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid this week, Postecoglou was asked if he would return to save the club from relegation by TNT Sports.

He simply replied: “No comment.”

He went on to say: “I am still invested in the club because I have an attachment to those players, I worked with them for two years.

“The last time I interacted with the fans there was 200,000 on the streets of London.

“It pains me to see it. It definitely looks like the players are fairly lost at the moment. There’s obvious pressure there. It’s a really difficult time.

“It all manifested itself with what happened last night. It’s almost the worst-case scenario, you playing a side away from home, Atletico, who never drop below a performance level of two.

“They’re always at a really strong level. It was a horror start for them.”

“There is no way that anyone would say, objectively, these players are performing at the level they are capable of.”

Thomas Frank, who replaced Postecoglou at the Lilywhites, has already been sacked. Interim replacement Igor Tudor is already under pressure.

But the door at Parkhead is open this summer, if he’s so willing to go back on his word…

Ange Postecoglou’s spell at Celtic

When Postecoglou replaced Neil Lennon, he inherited a Celtic side reeling from a dismal campaign played in empty stadiums, trailing Rangers by 25 points.

The Australian’s tenure started poorly with three consecutive away league defeats and an early exit in the Europa League. However, key acquisitions like Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota, and Josip Juranovic revitalised the squad, ultimately securing the League Cup.

Against the odds, Celtic reclaimed the league title from a Rangers side that had reached a European final, and the best was still to come.

While European victories remained elusive in the Champions League, Celtic’s domestic dominance was absolute in his second season, which saw the Hoops win the Premiership title with 99 points.

Postecoglou concluded his stint in Scotland by securing a treble in his final match, leaving for Tottenham just days later.
