Ange Postecoglou delivers grim Celtic squad update ahead of Boxing Day clash

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has admitted the squad available to him for the Boxing Day clash against St Johnstone will be very similar to what we witnessed in Paisley on Wednesday night.

Key players such as Joe Hart, Kyogo Furuhashi, James Forrest and David Turnbull all missed out completely against St Mirren as the Bhoys laboured to a 0-0 draw.

After the match, Postecoglou insisted to BBC Radio Scotland he didn’t rest anyone for the Scottish Premiership encounter.

Ange Postecoglou not expecting major Celtic squad boost

Now, he’s told Sky Sports he isn’t expecting major reinforcements for the game in Perth.

The Bhoys boss told the broadcaster: “It’s unlikely with the short turnaround. We might get one or two but at this stage, it will be a similar sort of team that went out on Wednesday night.”

That means we could see another patchwork front three, with some inexperienced options both in the starting eleven and on the bench. No harm to Owen Moffat, or even Mikey Johnston, but they aren’t at the level of a Kyogo, Forrest or Jota.

St Johnstone are unlikely to provide an easier test than St Mirren. In fact, Postecoglou is expecting another very close encounter.

He told Sky Sports: “All the games are pretty tight. There are no games you go into thinking it will be less of a challenge. St Johnstone will provide a challenge.

“On Wednesday night our performance was good, we’ve just got to find a way to put the ball in the net.”

Three points by any means necessary Celtic, that’s all that matters for this one in front of a reduced capacity and with the Bhoys squad stretched to its limits.

We can leave any fancy football or blistering performances for the New Year, if we must.

In other news, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou honestly addresses 6-point gap to rivals.
