Ange Postecoglou has stated that a new Celtic sporting director is a priority for the club, but likely after the summer transfer window.
Celtic have been linked with a new sporting director/director of football ever since Neil Lennon left the club in February. There was then bemusement when Postecoglou was appointed without one in place as signings began to come into the club.
Speaking after the appointment of Postecoglou, McKay stated that he was “open-minded” to the prospect of a new DoF coming into the football club [Glasgow Times].
And today, Postecoglou admitted that it’s likely something that will be pressed ahead with after the summer window.
Speaking via Celtic TV at his pre-Jablonec press conference, Postecoglou said: “Mate, whenever somebody above talks to me about anything other than bringing in players I kind of say ‘the connection is bad so try again later’!
“My sole focus at the moment is on getting the right squad together. That doesn’t mean that what you’re talking about isn’t important. It is. It’s a priority.
“But it’s a priority post-window. I’ve got some ideas and I know Dom’s got some ideas on how we restructure things in the football department, so we’ll crack on with that once the window closes.”
Celtic must make sporting director role clear to supporters
For many fans, the logical time to appoint a sporting director would’ve been before the summer window. It would’ve made sense for that appointment to have been made before we started restructuring the playing squad.
Then again, Celtic may have a different idea with regards to what they want their sporting director to be. It could differ from the norm, and Postecoglou will want to give his own view on things also.
However, there would be immediate alarm bells if the manager was helping to pick the sporting director. That shouldn’t be the order of things.
But Celtic simply have to make it clear as to what their sporting director’s remit would be. It’s essential that fans have a clear knowledge of what the role entails. Keeping that from the fans will only lead to further frustration.
It must also be explained as to why Celtic will have waited until after the window to bring one in. It goes against all logic with regards to what a standard sporting director is supposed to do.
Today’s reveal from Postecoglou was certainly interesting. However, if a new man is brought in after the window, a lot of questions will need to be answered.
