Ange Postecoglou delivers verdict on the surprise Celtic return of Vasilis Barkas
The smart money was on Vasilis Barkas never playing for Celtic again when Joe Hart pinned down the number one spot over the summer.
Indeed, given the Greek goalkeeper was not even included in trips abroad for UEFA Europa League matches, with Scott Bain and Tobi Oluwayemi ahead of him, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was a guarantee he’d never pull on the jersey before being sold or loaned out.
Yet an injury to Joe Hart and the absence of Scott Bain yesterday made his appearance against St Johnstone a necessity.
Celtic boss credits Barkas for being prepared
Manager Ange Postecoglou was happy with what he witnessed, telling The Glasgow Times: “That’s why these guys train hard every day. Their opportunities will come. They don’t know when it is going to come, at what point, but they have got to be ready, for themselves as much as anything else.
“It was great for Barkas today to get an opportunity. I thought he did really well for us. He came out for a couple of crosses. He didn’t have an awful lot to do apart from that, but that is why they train hard every day, so they are ready for an opportunity.”
We may not have learned loads about the future of Barkas from his appearance at St Johnstone. In fact, again, you’d be forgiven for thinking it is his last appearance of the season.
But football is an unpredictable beast and Postecoglou will feel he at least has someone to rely on if the worst happens to Hart and Bain.
With a January transfer window ahead, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Barkas move on. If he does, at least he managed to contribute one last time during a pretty uninspiring spell in Glasgow.
