Ange Postecoglou explains new Celtic contract for Anthony Ralston
Ange Postecoglou has explained the new Celtic contract handed out to Anthony Ralston yesterday after a superb turnaround in his Hoops career.
Celtic fans were left fuming when his deal was extended by a year back in the summer. This was due to the fact he had failed to make an impact at the club despite being a member of the first-team squad for 4 years.
However, the contrast in mood after yesterday’s contract announcement was staggering. Ralston committed himself to Parkhead until the summer of 2025, leaving supporters ecstatic after flourishing as the club’s number 1 right-back this summer.
As Postecoglou has touched on the decision to offer Tony a new deal at his pre-Ferencvaros presser today.
Speaking via Celtic TV, Ange said: “Yeah I’m happy. It was a pretty easy process to be fair. Anthony obviously loves this football club and for him there wasn’t too much going back and forth. The people advising him did a good job as well but it was never a matter of too much negotiation there.
“He’s getting rewarded for his form and more than his form. Just the way he’s gone about things since the start of the year. He did sign a contract at the start of the year but in life, you get rewarded for doing things right. He’s committed totally to this football club and what we’re trying to do.
“Delighted for him because sometimes a football career can be a very precarious thing and a lot of uncertainty. So I think he deserves to have some security around his life and his football career, and I’m sure there’s more to come.”
Anthony Ralston still has work to do to fend off the Celtic right-back competition
It’s all positive for Anthony at the moment. He’s competing for Celtic regularly both domestically and in Europe. He’s also surely banging on the door of the Scotland squad as he ridiculously continues to be snubbed by Steve Clarke.
He’ll have certainly taken this in the summer. The truth is that Ralston was massively unfavoured by the Celtic support. There was even some spite towards him that he was still receiving opportunities after failed loan spells with the likes of Dundee United and St Johnstone respectively.
It all just felt really strange that Ralston was being kept. Especially with a new manager coming in the door. If anything, we all would’ve put our houses on Postecoglou taking one look at him and looking for an upgrade.
Instead, Ralston rose to the challenges in incredible fashion. He’s shown a fine engine on him and is starting to improve his crossing attributes. His back-tracking has also gotten substantially better whilst he already has 4 goals to his name this season. Everything is looking up for the right-back.
Of course, he has a major challenge on his hands still at Celtic Park. Ralston is still having to contend with the battle posed by Croatia number 1 right-back Josip Juranovic. You still feel that when Ange gives Josip a run in the position, he could very well make it his own.
But Ralston is simply proving undroppable at the moment. There isn’t any sign Postecoglou will change things up anytime soon. Ralston simply isn’t giving him reason to.
