Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou says he understands the frustrations of supporters over the club’s recruitment strategy.
However, the Greek-Aussie boss isn’t willing to change the way he signs players. Nor is he going to dip into the UK market for the sake of it.
In typically bullish fashion, Postecoglou empathised with fans over the slow transfer action of the summer window. Carl Starfelt and Kyogo Furuhashi have been the big-name arrivals, but neither have been able to feature in pre-season. Or, indeed the Champions League Qualifiers.
With a threadbare squad, Postecoglou would do well to get Celtic firing out the blocks. Clearly, transfer business was needed after a number of players left the club at the end of 20-21.
Postecoglou isn’t panicking though, and he insists he knows what he’s doing. The Celtic boss said [via the Sun]:
“I don’t want to make the wrong decisions for this club because of the current situation we’re in.
“It’s about putting together a team that is going to be successful.
“I don’t want to bring people in because they happen to be available and it is easier. It would have been a lot easier to sign someone from the UK than from Japan. No doubt.
“But I want to resist the temptation of just bringing in people because it might satisfy in the short term.
“It might get people off our backs because we are bringing players in. But if they’re the wrong ones, we are going to be revisiting the same problems in 12 months time.
“I want the right ones in and because of that it is taking a bit longer.
“I understand the frustrations about it, I get frustrated. It’s just the way it is right now.”
Ange Postecoglou is right about Celtic recruitment; buy cheap, buy twice
We’ve seen what happens when Celtic rush around to fill gaps in the squad. Despite having what looked to be a very decent summer transfer window last season, it was a series of misshapen parts.
Resigning Elyounoussi was good business. But Shane Duffy didn’t fit the tactical requirements of the team. Diego Laxalt was clearly brought in for a 3-5-2, which was abandoned. We can go on and on about the missteps of the 20-21 campaign.

So, Postecoglou and Celtic will surely be after quality as much as quantity. Yes, that’s going to make supporters anxious about Ange Postecoglou and his recruitment. However, if you believe in the manager, faith and patience are needed for him to get it right.
That being the case, we’ll have to wait for the likes of Starfelt and Furuhashi. There may be other signings from far-flung locales we’ll need to patient on. However, we’ve been given little reason to doubt Postecoglou in terms of recruitment yet.
