Ange Postecoglou gives special mention to Celtic talent Tobi Oluwayemi; first appearance may not be far away
Ange Postecoglou has been speaking about young Celtic goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi at today’s pre Real Betis press conference.
Okay, he was asked about the keeper by the Cynic, who were in attendance.
But Ange was quick to talk up the England youth international who we signed from Tottenham in 2019.
“Stevie Woods, our goalkeeping coach, rates him very highly,” Ange revealed. (Celtic YouTube, 18 mins)
“We’ve had him up training with the team and he’s shown some good qualities.
“With all of these guys, we try and include them as much as we can and give them that experience.
“Toby was on the Champions League (sic) list so it gives him a chance to travel with the team and get the experience.”
Oluwayemi isn’t too far away from first Celtic chance
Oluwayemi actually signed a new two-year deal at Celtic back in June. (Scotsman)
That means that he’s tied down to the club until the summer of 2024, with some first-team opportunities surely in the offing well before then.
He is still just 18, and is yet to make a senior career appearance.
He’s still extremely unlikely to play a part tomorrow night, but you do feel that he is slowly going up the list of alternatives for Joe Hart.
Celtic have a number of young keepers on their books. Conor Hazard is the prime candidate but may need to leave to come back and be our number one.
Ryan Mullen is one of the B team keepers, while Ross Doohan is highly rated but currently out on loan at Tranmere Rovers.
Oluwayemi arguably has more potential than the three just mentioned and has been kept on our books thus far.
And if Stevie Woods rates him highly, we may just see him sooner than you think.
