Celtic captain Callum McGregor stepped up his return from injury this afternoon after joining his teammates in training.

The 29-year-old has been out of action since sustaining a knee injury in Celtic’s 3-1 UEFA Champions League loss to RB Leipzig in Germany back in October.

As skipper of the side, we have seen the huge influence McGregor has on the side, and he was always likely to be a massive miss.

Thankfully, the Bhoys have stepped up without McGregor, with the likes of Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate playing a crucial role in his absence.

However, there is no doubt that Celtic supporters and McGregor’s teammates are eagerly anticipating the midfielder’s return to action.

Earlier today, fans were left buzzing to see the Hoops academy graduate gradually return to training with the squad as they prepare for the Sydney Super Cup this week.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official channel, McGregor opened up on what will be an ‘important’ week for his recovery and spoke about the Bhoys trip down under.

He said [Celtic TV]: “Hopefully, I will be joining bits of the sessions this week and just progressing the rehab. It will be an important five, six days for me as well. I am looking forward to getting back on the grass with the boys.”

“(It will be) More of the same, we understand the way we want to play. I’m sure the gaffer will be keen for us to put on a good show coming back to his home country. He will be putting pressure on the lads to make sure they are performing well. Good football, good intensity, and want to have two victories as well.

“These guys get up in the middle of the night to watch the games, and this is an opportunity to see us live, and it’s important we don’t disappoint. We show them the best of ourselves and put on a good show for them.”

McGregor’s recovery comes at a good time as Bhoys begin early preparations for return.

Having come through domestic action unscathed and continuing to put in good performances without our captain, it will come as a huge boost to welcome McGregor back to action.

His return from injury comes at an ideal time too, with the Bhoys beginning their preparations early for the second half of the campaign.

Alongside the trip to Australia, the Hoops are also set for a winter training camp visit to Portugal, where they will face French Ligue 1 side Rennes in friendly action.

The time spent on the training ground during both of these trips will be crucial for McGregor and act as a mini pre-season for the captain.

You would imagine there is no one more raring to go than the skipper after several weeks out of action. So, he will be looking forward to this stage of recovery as he gears up for his return.
