Ange Postecoglou hints at Celtic debut vs Motherwell with Oliver Abildgaard update
Ange Postecoglou has suggested Oliver Abildgaard will make his debut today, or over the next couple of games, after a solid period of Celtic training at Lennoxtown.
Abildgaard arrived on a year-long stay at the end of the summer transfer window but didn’t get the opportunity to play in September for a variety of reasons, not least because he didn’t have much team training time between seasons.
However, it now seems he’s ready to make his bow over the next week, if not from the start, then the bench. Some have even suggested he could play at centre-back, but Postecoglou has tempered those expectations.
As quoted by The Herald, the Bhoys boss said: “He can play there and he has played there in the past. With him it’s obviously about introducing him to the team, and I think it would be unfair if we put him into a position that is not his primary position as his introduction to the team.
“But he has trained well the last couple of weeks, he’s got his fitness levels up, and he should see some game time in the next couple of games. As he gets stronger within himself and feels better then he will definitely be an option.”
There’s certainly a lot of interest from supporters in what the Danish midfielder can offer Celtic. He’s arrived in Scotland on something of a FIFA technicality and was a big player for Rubin Kazan.
Said to be combative and robust defensively, he could add a much-needed dynamic to the Bhoys midfield, especially when it comes to European action.
Hopefully we at least see him get minutes off the bench against Motherwell, building up towards a first start at some point this month.
