Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is excited to have Mikey Johnston back in his squad and has tipped him to make a “huge impact” moving forward.
Johnston has made cameos in two successive matches against Ferencvaros and St Johnstone, impressing on each occasion.
The winger got a full half an hour of action against the Perth side today and was very dangerous in the opposition third. He delivered a number of tricky crosses into the box, also hitting the post after some excellent attacking play.
He’s now set to play a big part in Postecoglou’s plans. The manager spoke about the Academy graduate after today’s match and is clearly a huge fan.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Bhoys boss said: “I was really pleased to see Mikey back because he looked really good in pre-season.
“I know how talented he is but the key for him was to get his body healthy and to be really patient with him. He’s a talented player and he’s now getting more game time.
“The way we play I know he can have a huge impact for us, he just needs to stay healthy and keep improving his game. Hopefully James Forrest is not too far away either.
“From that point of view it’s certainly helpful to have these guys because we are going to need a strong squad.”
On the evidence of his substitute appearances so far this season, you have to say Postecoglou is right to be optimistic about the impact of Johnston.
But it’s important to remember he hasn’t started a single match for the club since January and still has a long way to go on his return from injury. On too many occasions we’ve seen him come into the team and drop out again after a few games.
If he can now find consistency both in terms of fitness and form, we’ll certainly have a new potent weapon to add to the Celtic attack.
