Ange Postecoglou provides Celtic transfer update after win over Jablonec
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has reacted to his side’s 4-2 win over FK Jablonec.
Specifically, he’s addressed the need for more depth in the squad. The likes of Nir Bitton and Anthony Ralston have been relied upon, two players who were far from regulars in 20-21.
In a game where Celtic really could’ve scored a few more, the Bhoys looked convincing going forward, with excellent midfield performances and all three starting attackers scoring. However, in defence, some questions remain, and it’s an area Postecoglou is keen to address.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Postecoglou said [BBC Sportsound, 5/8/21, 18:43]:
“I don’t want to put timelines on it, because we’re working on things. There certainly will be additions. I still think we need to bring in some reinforcements, we still don’t have a lot of depth in certain areas.
“Some players are just playing every game because I just don’t have alternatives at the moment. At some point, that’s going to take its toll, because we’ve got a lot of games, particularly through August. So we still need to bring players in.
“Timelines are a bit difficult because of the situation we’re in. I’m hopeful that sort of, next week, we’ll have at least a couple more players in.”
Celtic showing real promise under Ange Postecoglou, but he needs more backing
It’s a point that’s borne repetition all summer; Ange Postecoglou needs backing from the club.
So far, he’s got it; the board have already outspent their total from Summer 2020. Still, the extensive surgery needed to the Celtic defence has to continue. Carl Starfelt and Joe Hart have come in, both established players with plenty of experience and pedigree.
However, Nir Bitton is not the answer to partner him. Christopher Jullien has been out for longer than expected, while Kristoffer Ajer left for Premier League new boys Brentford.
But Ange sounds optimistic. Like he’s holding back, even. Even on radio, there was a cheeky glint to Postecoglou’s voice as he said that he hoped for reinforcements next week.
It’s what this Celtic team needs, and it’s what Ange needs to continue his tactical revolution at Parkhead in earnest.
