Ange Postecoglou is ready to work with a sporting director or any other staff member that can bring success to Celtic.

It was Dom McKay who was primarily asked about the concept of a sporting director at yesterday’s broadcast media conference.

The new CEO didn’t give much away, but did say the club are currently reviewing what is needed in the football department.

The print media event meant it was Postecoglou’s turn for the question.

He was asked if he would welcome the chance to work with someone in such a role at the Bhoys.

The new Celtic boss told The Glasgow Times: “I am hands on and I want to do everything, but what I’ve learnt in my 25 years is that you can’t. I’m pretty good at surrounding myself with the best people, whatever area that may be.

“The one thing that hasn’t changed over the 25 years is that I still have a limited amount of time at my disposal, that hasn’t changed. I know the demands of this job, and I’m going to make sure I have the best people around me in all areas.

“The club’s been supportive about that, whether that’s a director of football, a sporting director, sports science, we’ll make the best decisions to support the environment that I know we need to have to be successful.

“Coming from football on that side of the world, where people don’t rate it very highly, I can tell you in terms of high performance environments we’re as good as anyone. We have to be, because our football isn’t as good. So, I’ll be bringing that here as well as the football element.”

Ange is only just in the door, so he can hardly be held to account for the lack of progress on the director front in recent months.

However, Celtic fans are understandably growing frustrated with the whole process. Names have been linked with the position for months, since before Neil Lennon resigned even.

The only thing we really learned from yesterday’s media events is that the sporting director role doesn’t seem close to being nailed down or filled.

McKay was quite vague in his chat about it.

Postecoglou does seem to suggest it’s a goer though, if they can find the right person.
