Ange Postecoglou reveals Celtic winter training camp plans
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed that the squad will be heading off to Portugal for a winter training camp during the World Cup.
The 2022/23 campaign will be slightly different this season, with the Qatar 2022 World Cup being moved to the winter, taking place between November and December.
The Bhoys are in domestic and European action right up until the 12th of November. However, the club schedule will take a pause before returning on the 17th of December.
Whilst several Celtic stars, including Josip Juranovic and Kyogo Furuhashi, just to name a few, are expected to head off to the tournament, those remaining behind will instead be going to Australia to participate in the Sydney Super Cup.
Ange Postecoglou’s side will be facing up against Sydney FC and English Premier League club Everton in two friendly fixtures back in the Celtic manager’s homeland.
During this week, the 57-year-old has headed to Australia to promote the tournament, alongside Celtic officials, with talks regarding the event also taking place.
The former Socceroos boss has been taking part in plenty of interviews in the build-up to November, and he has recently revealed that the Sydney Super Cup aren’t the only plans the club’s hierarchy have for over the winter for the squad.
Postecoglou revealed during a radio interview that he and his players will also jet off to a training camp in Portugal to prepare for the second half of the campaign.
When asked if he planned to travel to Qatar to watch any of the World Cup games, he said [SEN Sports]: “No, it’s probably the only time I’ll have (after the Sydney Super Cup) within the next sort of period to get down to Melbourne and visit friends.
“I’ve got about another week off after those games. So, I’m gonna go down to Melbourne and just catch up with people and watch the games on the telly.
“And then we’ll head back, cause we’ll go back straight after that and go into camp in Portugal, and get ready for the second half of the year because, again, with the World Cup being smack bang in the middle, it means the programme either side of it is congested. Not just got us, for all football clubs.
“So, we’re gonna get ready to go again.”
Training camp plans in place ahead of crucial fixtures in the second half of Premiership season.
Although Ange Postecoglou’s firm focus will be on the here and now, it is good to see the club has already put plans in place for a winter training camp.
Although several players could be missing due to their involvement in the World Cup, this camp will provide those not heading to Qatar with the chance to keep up to speed and work closely alongside Postecoglou and his coaching staff.
Upon our return to domestic action, we go straight into a tough run of fixtures, heading to Pittodrie, Easter Road and Ibrox within the first four games.
So, Postecoglou will be keen to keep his squad working and preparing for a potentially crucial period of fixtures in the season.
For now, though, the Celtic manager will be looking to get back to winning ways when the Bhoys return on the 1st of October and make a strong finish before the winter World Cup gets underway.
