Ange Postecoglou superbly shuts down media’s Celtic treble talk

Ange Postecoglou refused to entertain questions about a potential Celtic treble today, putting full focus on the difficult task at hand against Rangers this Sunday.

The Bhoys are nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and are into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, as well as this weekend’s final at Hampden.

However, it still remains far too early for any players or staff at the Bhoys to be discussing the prospect of a treble, as Postecoglou superbly put to a reporter today.

Ange Postecoglou isn’t having Celtic treble talk

Speaking at a media event at the national stadium, Postecoglou said [Sky Sports News, 15:50]: “Mate, you’ve got to win one before you even think about winning two, or even think about winning three. To me, that’s to start talking about stuff that is totally out of our control right now.

“All we can do is prepare well and be ready for a big game on Sunday, to try and win a trophy. Beyond that, come Monday, whatever happens, we’ll have preparation for another game and that will be our focus.”

It would be madness for Postecoglou to bite on any notion of a treble days before a massive final against a difficult opponent. It’s an open goal for a media storm.

As we know, the Celtic boss is often too clever to fall into those kinds of traps and has sidestepped the discussion completely here.

Of course, fans will dream of a treble and I am sure plenty of pundits will speculate whether it’s possible. However, within the Celtic camp, it has always been about remaining fully focused on the next game.

That relentless, machine-like consistency is what has brought the Bhoys this far under Postecoglou. They are not going to throw out that philosophy now because it’s a convenient narrative heading into a final.

I’m not sure what response was expected of Ange to a question about a treble today, but it was always going to be similar to the one he gave!
