Ange Postecoglou ‘arrogance’ comments vindicated as pundit talks Celtic and ‘SPL’

Ange Postecoglou was spot on to brand Premier League pundits “arrogant and pretentious”.

The former Celtic manager used the pressures he felt in Glasgow as a prime example of why life at Tottenham Hotspur is no big step.

Postecoglou lifted five trophies in two seasons at Parkhead before he departed for down south and various pundits have had their say throughout his time there.

The Australian, 59, has had his credentials questioned having never worked in England prior to his Spurs move.

And all too often have former players had critical and disrespectful opinions of the Scottish game as well as diminishing the boss’ achievements at Celtic.

This morning it was Jermaine Pennant’s turn to have his say and the ex-Liverpool wide man insisted he wasn’t buying Ange’s optimism about winning trophies in North London.

The 41-year-old chimed in with his viewpoint of the Premier League being a serious jump in quality from what Postecoglou has been used to in his career.

But while his point may have been about Spurs specifically, the Englishman still managed to get things wrong as he wound back the clocks to call the division the SPL – not used since a rebrand in 2013.

Pennant told talkSPORT: “Every second season he’s won something, so he can say that.

“But he’s got to understand that he’s now in the Premier League. It’s not the SPL. It’s not the Aussie A-League. It’s the Premier League.

“To win something here, you’ve got to be a good manager and have a good team.

“But like I said, he’s done it. So he can say that.”

Pressure of managing Celtic is unlike any other club

It comes a short period of time after Postecoglou let rip on the “pretentiousness” of EPL elites who feel their game is on another planet.

The Aussie pointed to the levels of scrutiny, fan criticism and Scottish media examinations in the game north of the border as one of the biggest elements of managing Celtic.

Victories at Parkhead are a necessity while Spurs can afford to lose matches and have it not cause a crisis.
