Ange Postecoglou's brilliant Giorgos Giakoumakis Celtic update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has provided a brilliant update on the Giorgos Giakoumakis situation this afternoon.

The £2.5m summer signing from VVV-Venlo has been missing over the last week due to an injury picked up before the Raith Rovers clash [Sky Sports]. It was feared when he was sent for a scan that the player could be out for a period of time.

Celtic fans have been left disappointed with our lack of centre-forward options in recent times. Albian Ajeti has failed to take his big chance as the Hoops struggle to replace Kyogo Furuhashi’s influence. However, Postecoglou has today confirmed that he wants to give Giakoumakis some game-time at Aberdeen this Sunday, as reported by Allison Conroy:

Giakoumakis has yet to make his debut for the Hoops. And his injury problems certainly couldn’t have come at a more infuriating time.

But the main takeaway here is that the player won’t be out for several weeks. His chance to kickstart his Celtic career will come on Sunday against Aberdeen.

It remains to be seen if this means he’ll start the game on Sunday. In truth, it’s more likely that an appearance from the bench will be on the cards.

Celtic fans finally set to see Giorgos Giakoumakis

The Celtic supporters are finally set to see their new man in action. It certainly isn’t before time. You could even go as far as to say his need to build up his fitness levels have led to us dropping key points. Who knows how Livingston and Dundee Utd could’ve gone had he been available.

Regardless, he’s ready to get stuck into the action now. It’s not Giakoumakis’ fault that he’s had to sit out the last few weeks. It’s just typical that one of our big summer signings had to be a striker that hadn’t played for several months.

Giakoumakis, in theory, should give the Hoops a different dimension. Celtic have long since struggled to have a genuine aerial threat in the finaln third. Giorgos should be the one to provide that.

Of course, he’s a goalscorer at his core too. Remember, Giakoumakis finished last season as the top scorer in the Eredivisie. He finished his campaign with 29 goals in all competitions – 26 of which came in the Dutch top-flight [Transfermarkt].

But the truth is that Celtic fans don’t particularly know what they’re getting in the Greek centre-forward. We’ve yet to have a proper look at him, something we’ll hopefully be afforded against Aberdeen.

So long as no further injury knocks occur of course. Given our luck so far this season, nothing would surprise you.
