Ange Postecoglou’s brilliant response after again being questioned on his Celtic style

Ange Postecoglou provided a typically class response after again being grilled on his Celtic style despite an upturn in results.

The Hoops have won their last two matches against Aberdeen and Motherwell respectively. It’s led to confidence levels at Parkhead sky-rocketing as they close in on their rivals at the top of the Premiership.

However, even still, Postecoglou is still being questioned on the way in which his Celtic team play and whether he’ll modify his game.

And after again being asked about it yesterday, he silenced the media in brilliant fashion as he reminded them of his achievements. As quoted by the Daily Record, Postecoglou said: “I enjoy that part of it, the fact that people debate the merits or otherwise, and whether I should take a pragmatic approach.

“For me, that’s what I believe in, that’s what I think will bring us success, and that’s the approach. Mate, I did it at a World Cup facing up to Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Andres Iniesta, and David Villa. I took that approach, we paid a price – or a high tariff – then as well, but I still think it’s the way forward mate.

“From our perspective, don’t be mistaken that I disregard the opposition or what they bring to the table when setting up the team. We do a lot of analysis, we understand where their strengths lie and we have to make sure we are vigilant in minimising whatever strengths they have. But at the same time, we have to back ourselves.”

Ange Postecoglou won’t ever change his Celtic style – it’s tiring to continue debating it

Postecoglou has never hidden the fact that he loves being questioned. That he thrives when proving doubters wrong and that it’s something that makes him tick. But you have to question the value in continuing to ask him about the way in which his teams play.

It’s clear that the Celtic boss isn’t going to be mixing things up anytime soon. He has a set way of playing that he believes reflects total football. He’s passionate about it and, some may even say stubborn.

But regardless of how you reflect on Postecoglou’s view, one thing remains the same. He isn’t going to change. It’s something he grew up believing in and a formula that’s led him from being an unknown Australian figure to the Celtic manager.

Now, it’s unclear whether we’ll benefit from this in the long-term. Certainly we would hope Postecoglou can fulfill his vision at Celtic Park. If he does, we’re in for a massively exciting Celtic team.

But even the supporters have stopped questioning the merits of different approaches. In the face of extensive criticism, Postecoglou has continued to stick by his own principles. It’s to be admired even if some disagree with its effectiveness.

Hopefully, when the Greek-Australian does depart, he’ll do so having left one of the most eye-pleasing Celtic sides we’ve ever seen. That is, after all, his ultimate goal.
