Ange Postecoglou had a difficult week for those of a Celtic persuasion on his mind today, serving a reminder of the power this club can have during sad moments.
Former star Frank McGarvey passed away last week, while high-profile Celtic fan Kevin Bridges also recently confirmed he had lost his father Andy, another who greatly enjoyed the Bhoys.
Their families won’t be the only supporters having a difficult time of it during this period either and Postecoglou spoke poignantly in his post-match media conference, as shared by fan media rep Declan McConville on Twitter.
The Celtic boss said: “I know Frank’s kids were here today. I did speak to the boys about it before the game today. Frank was a guy who sat in that dressing room and wore that shirt over 200 times and scored more than 100 goals for the football club.
“We’ve got to make sure we always honour those kinds of people because they’re part of the Celtic family. For all our guys who are in the dressing room now, some of them have got kids who watch them play, just like Frank’s kids were there watching today. Hopefully, in a difficult time we gave them a little bit of joy today. I’m sure Frank would have been pleased with what he saw.
“I know Kevin Bridges, who’s also a massive Celtic fan, lost his father in the last couple of days as well. Our thoughts and prayers to those people who are all part of this family. We know that in difficult times, it’s amazing what this football club can do for people.”
Speaking from experience with my own father, who passed away a few years ago, I know how huge a part Celtic can play in the healing and grieving process.
Often, Celtic is a huge bonding factor in our relationships with loved ones and that memory continues well after they are gone and is remembered on matchdays.
I thought these Postecoglou comments were worth sharing – not just because it’s a classy touch – but because it’s true for every family that is going through a difficult time and I’m certain his comments can be a comfort.
