Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has responded to Wiener Viktoria’s classy cake gesture before yesterday’s 7-0 pre-season win.

The Hoops ran out comfortable winners against the Austrian third division side as the club looks ahead to another huge season.

Viktoria didn’t offer much of a threat throughout the 90 minutes, but they did show their class off the pitch in a brilliant gesture. The club had a cake made for Celtic to welcome them to Austria as they presented it to Ange pre-match.

And the Celtic boss joked that he couldn’t wait to tuck into it post-match as he credited our pre-season foes for their kindness.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Ange said: “I’m starving! I haven’t had a chance to eat it [the cake] yet. They have all been very kind. You come to these places and you understand it is a thrill for them and they want to host you well, so it has been good.”

Celtic shone on the occasion with goals from Johnny Kenny [x2], Reo Hatate, Mikey Johnston, Christopher Jullien, James Forrest, and Rocco Vata sealing a first win in pre-season.

Wiener Viktoria show their class off the pitch; Celtic do the business on it

It was certainly a fine move by the Austrians as they paid Celtic some extra respect in the build-up to the contest. Credit to them for that.

However, there was certainly no room for niceties on the pitch even if it was a friendly. Celtic showed absolutely no mercy as they romped into a 6-0 lead by half-time. The two sides were classes apart and it showed on the day.

Ange was given food for thought over a number of performances. However, it’s worth remembering just how lowly a team we were facing on the day.

You get the feeling we’ll learn a lot more about Celtic’s current fitness and intensity levels when we play Austrian heavyweights Rapid Vienna on Saturday. Ange will be looking for a similar level of performance and another victory to go with it.

Expect a lot more senior stars to return for that one as we crank up the prep work even further.

But it’s great to see some of the fringe players enjoying themselves yesterday and making positive contributions. That’s all we could’ve really asked of them.
