Celtic have announced the departure of Jeremie Frimpong.
The Dutch right-back has signed for Bayer Leverkusen, but the club haven’t disclosed the fee paid by the Bundesliga outfit.
Earlier today, the Daily Record reported that a second club had launched a bid for the 20-year-old. Serie A side Fiorentina were interested, but ultimately have lost out to the side who sit 3rd in the German top-flight.
In a tweet, the club said:
“We would like to thank @JeremieFrimpong for his contribution to the Club and wish him all the best for his future career.”
Celtic losing Frimpong is a massive blow. The ex-Man City player has made the second-most appearances out of anyone in the Bhoys squad [WhoScored?]. It also leaves Hoops boss Neil Lennon scrambling for a replacement, with Elhamed and Ralston left as the only experienced right-backs at his disposal.
While some Celtic supporters won’t miss Frimpong, social media was full of well-wishing Bhoys supporters. Frimpong could be frustrating, no doubt, but with the right coaching, the right-back has undeniable potential.
Many fans are speculating that the defender was alienated by the Celtic manager. Frimpong’s bubbly demeanour has been replaced with scowls over recent weeks.

This is what happens when you have Neil Lennon. All the best Jeremie

So the club knew he wanted to leave, and that Elhamed has been unhappy, and now it’s the final week of the window and Tony Ralston is the only viable right back. Typifies the state of this club. Shambles.

Can’t blame him for leaving when none of the young players have adequate coaches to develop them.
