Celtic star Anthony Ralston has pointed to the examples of James Forrest and Callum McGregor after signing a new deal.
Not only that, the resurgent Bhoys defender maintained that anyone in the Academy can be a first-team player with the right work ethic. Ralston has emerged as if from nowhere to become a key player under Ange Postecoglou.
Not only that, he’s changed the perception of supporters entirely, with consistently excellent performances. In doing so, he cited the examples of teammates Callum McGregor and James Forrest, who also came through the club’s Academy.
It’s a great example in and of itself. Especially for young Celtic players hoping to make the grade under Ange Postecoglou. The likes of Luca Connell and Ewan Henderson have had a frustrating couple of years. But Ralston’s experience indicates there’s no value in giving up.
Ralston said [Celtic FC]:
“It’s every fan’s dream to be in the position that I’m in today and I’m very grateful for it.
“And it’s important to believe you can one day come through the ranks and play for Celtic.
“The prime examples have been Callum McGregor and James Forrest for what can be achieved through hard work and dedicating yourself and one day it could be you.”
Anthony Ralston shows what’s possible for Celtic Academy talents
Transfers are great, especially ones that come in, buy into the club entirely, and contribute meaningfully. Plucking a player from obscurity and having them leave Celtic better for it? It’s a joy.
But there’s nothing quite like seeing Celtic Academy players make it. After all, it’s in the Celtic DNA. From Willie Maley’s teams to Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions, the Quality Street Gang and the Centenary side, there have been teams built by Celtic that have stood the test of time.
There haven’t been quite as many modern examples, sadly. The modern football climate often dictates that some of our best young talents are lured by “bigger” leagues, and it’s understandable.

However, guys like Callum McGregor committing his future to the club is a big deal. Ditto Ralston, who proves that even the least heralded talents can get big opportunities.
It’s been said a million times, but it bears repeating; Ralston was nowhere near first-choice, except by default. Managers had tried to get the best out of him, but he was either too raw or simply, just not good enough yet.
Now, he’s blossoming, and it’s a testament to his own immense hard work. Nobody deserves it more.
