Anthony Ralston on ex Celtic teammate who has done ‘excellent’ and ran opponent ragged in big clash

Anthony Ralston put in a shift for Scotland against Croatia earlier this weekend.

The Celtic defender once again proved he can cut it on the international stage as he shut down the experienced opponents for 90 plus minutes at Hampden Park.

Ralston has been criticised and somewhat harshly thrust into the spotlight for some performances in dark blue after his Euro 2024 difficulties.

But he showed up on Friday evening as John McGinn’s late winner sealed three Nations League points for the country after a strong showing.

It was not just Celtic’s defender who impressed on the right-flank, however, as Ralston made one key improvement on the night.

And the Hoops full-back acknowledged one of his former teammates for putting in an ‘excellent’ performance and keeping the Croatian defence on their back-foot for the vast majority of the action.

Ben Doak was the standout performer just in front of Ralston on the wing for his non-stop direct running at Manchester City superstar Josko Gvardiol.

In fact, ex-Parkhead teen Doak had the 22-year-old defender on toast as he constantly piled on the pressure and had the beating of his marker all evening.

Doak played a major part in the winning goal as he helped tee it up and Ralston was full of praise for the 19-year-old.

Speaking to the media in the mixed zone after the game, Ralston applauded his pal for an impressive showing.

And he explained how Doak was the main difference-maker on the night.

“He has done excellent on the wing,” Ralston said.

“I think when you play against 10 men, you just need to get your attackers on the ball as much as possible, move the ball quick and don’t dwell on it.

“We had a few [chances before McGinn’s winner], but you just keep doing it, keep getting the ball wide and get [Doak] one-on-one. Then, thankfully, we got the goal.

“We’ve played better in other games, especially first half. I’d much rather not play better and get the three points than play well and not get the three points”
