Former Celtic defender Anton Rogan has called for the club to spend big in the summer.

The Hoops were outclassed by Valencia in the Europa League on Thursday. Rogan’s belief is that the Bhoys won’t compete at the top level unless Brendan Rodgers is backed.

“When you look at the players that Brendan has brought in there have been quite a few loan signings ” he told the Belfast Telegraph.

“Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job at Celtic in Scotland and I’d love to see him given the resources to have a go in Europe, otherwise I feel that will continue to be a struggle.”

Lack of long-term signings

The Hoops mostly brought in loan players during the January window, with only Maryan Shved and Vakoun Issouf Bayo the notable long-term signings made by the club.

Rogan’s comments are significant when you consider that Celtic are likely to have a huge rebuilding process in the summer.

Huge rebuild ahead

All the loan players will be returning to their clubs at the end of the season. More significant is the fact that a host of players are out of contract at the end of the season. That includes key players like Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig.

Celtic must get their transfer strategy correct, going into what looks to be a huge summer for the club.
