Celtic star Arne Engels earned valuable international experience with Belgium over the international break as he prepares to return to Lennoxtown.

The 21-year-old was one of 13 Bhoys on international duty as club football took a seat on the backburner, earning deserved recognition for his form since moving to Glasgow.

Marking a landmark achievement, Arne Engels made his full Belgium debut against Italy, earning positive reviews from Belgian media after a ‘tireless’ performance.

Unfortunately, the Red Devils lost out on the night, and their luck didn’t improve in their second fixture of the window.

Budapest played host to the tie, where Engels failed to set the heather alight in a 1-0 defeat to Israel. Ultimately, his time away with Belgium has been bittersweet, and he has now been reacting on Instagram as his return to Parkhead becomes priority.

Despite a sense of frustration after two defeats that led them to the brink of relegation to League B, he posted a selection of pictures alongside the caption: “Even in tough times, it’s a big honor to represent (Belgium flag emoji).”

There may not be much positivity from the Red Devils’ results, but Engels can look back on this international break as one that holds major personal significance.

Earning caps for one of Europe’s elite nations doesn’t happen to everyone, so he deserves credit for making his dream a reality.

Evaluating his spell so far, Engels has shown he has a large scope to develop into a star at Celtic, mixing his running power with quality in possession and a desire to dominate in both boxes.

Three goals and six assists in 14 matches provide evidence of his class in the engine room, with his performances helping to keep positional competitors out of the starting line-up.
