Artur Boruc is expecting an emotional night in his farewell match between Legia and Celtic this evening, believing the event is taking place so he can “finally cry”.
Legia are Boruc’s boyhood club and that long association will be emotional enough for the goalkeeper, without also adding in Celtic – a team he also adored during his long football career.
Asked by Fakt whether there will be tears tonight, Boruc said: “This will be my celebration. I think that’s why there’s this match, so I can finally cry.
“I shed a tear in 2017 when I retired from Poland, the national team was a big part of my life. However, I have been connected with Legia since I was a teenager. Whenever I had the opportunity, I came to Warsaw. Many of these visits I didn’t remember later, but even that was cool.
“There are an incredible amount of memories anyway. That is why it will be easier to shed a tear on the pitch on Wednesday. In the capital I spent the most beautiful moments of my life. I still spend them.”
Boruc was also asked about the recent ticket controversy surrounding the match, with Legia supporters outraged that briefs for the game against Celtic cost so much.
The goalkeeper has moved to clear up rumours and addressed why he took to social media to share his views, stating: “The matter is simple. I have absolutely no profit from ticket sales for this match. This is an event that will not happen again. Neither in my life, nor the fans. It affected my words. I reacted spontaneously to the fact that I found myself under a bit of fire.”
And what’s next for the goalkeeper now that he’s transitioning away from on-pitch action?
Well it sounds like he’s going to make the most of his retirement, but he also plans to stay associated with Legia and announcements on that will be forthcoming.
He told Fakt: “I’m in talks with the authorities of the club. We will inform you about the details in due time. Before the match against Celtic my responsibilities are a little wider than usual. By the way, my role is changing. From a footballer to a kind of ambassador of the club.
“For now, I’d like to live a little. Fire up the grill with friends at game time on Saturday and enjoy it with them. That’s what I’ll devote myself to mostly.”
That sounds well earned to me Artur and I’m sure every Celtic supporter is wishing you well on your retirement.
