Odsonne Edouard’s reported admirers Aston Villa have today completed a club-record deal to sign Brentford striker Ollie Watkins.
Villa have consistently been linked with a move for Edouard throughout the entire summer window so far. However, the Sun reported earlier this week that the Premier League club had hit a brick wall in their bid to sign the Celtic man.
Fast forward several days and it appears that they’ve found their summer striker target in Watkins. Villa splashed out a total of £28million to get their man from the Championship club (BBC), who replaced him with Ivan Toney last week.
But what makes this even more interesting is that Villa are only supposed to be looking for one centre-forward this summer. The Sunday Mirror (02/08, p66) reported last month that Villa are in the market for a striker, a pacey winger, a midfielder, and a centre-back.
Therefore, it appears that they have their centre-forward, which would naturally rule them out of the running for Celtic man Edouard.
Exactly what we want to see
This follows a report from the Daily Mail earlier this week that stated that Leicester City were unlikely to put an offer in for Edouard at his current valuation.
The idea that Celtic may even be scaring off some Premier League clubs here is brilliant. It’s exactly the kind of stubborn resistance we need to see from our board this summer. Particularly when you consider the enormity of the current season.
Of course, that’s not to say that Villa won’t come back in with another offer for Eddy. But considering they have gaping holes in several other areas, they have plenty of money that will need spending elsewhere in that squad.
Edouard, meanwhile, has continued to make his mark in international football over the past week after bagging goals against Georgia and Azerbaijan respectively on France under-21 duty.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon has also confirmed that the club remains locked in contract talks with Edouard. Speaking to the Glasgow Times last month, Lennon said: “It’s as you were with contract talks, there has been no further movement on it.”
So in a summer when Eddy’s future will continuously be in the spotlight, news of Watkins signing for Villa is a tiny boost in that regard.
