Auston Trusty has credited Celtic’s winning mentality with helping him reach the 2026 World Cup, and the defender’s comments offer a powerful insight into what the club still provides ambitious players.

The USA international has earned a place in his country’s 2026 World Cup squad after two seasons at Celtic, and his explanation for that achievement was particularly revealing.

While many focus on exposure or visibility, Trusty pointed to something else entirely. He pointed to winning.

Auston Trusty’s World Cup comments say more than he perhaps realised

Trusty told The Celtic View podcast, “It’s what you live for. This is why we’re here. You know, I think, you know, every decision I’ve made in my career has been, in a sense, to put myself in a position to be a perfect national team and represent my country in the World Cup.

“You know, I think coming to Celtic, it really put me on the pedestal, put me on a platform to excel and have a lot of high seed, me excel and do well and do that. So that’s a big plus to coming to an organisation like this where you’re winning all the time. And that’s the mindset.”

The most important part of that quote is not the reference to a platform. It is the emphasis on winning and mentality.

Trusty is not suggesting Celtic simply put him in the shop window. He is saying the environment helped prepare him for the biggest stage in football.

Celtic’s demands mirror the pressure players face internationally

At Celtic, success is expected. Winning trophies is the minimum requirement and every result is scrutinised.

That pressure is very different from simply playing regular football. It demands consistency, resilience and a mentality capable of handling expectation.

Trusty’s Celtic career backs up his argument

The defender arrived at Celtic in 2024 and remains under contract until 2029.

During his time at the club he has experienced sustained domestic success, while also developing into a World Cup player for the United States.

That does not prove Celtic alone made him an international footballer. It does, however, support his own belief that the club’s winning culture accelerated his progress.

The defender’s message should resonate with future Celtic signings

Trusty’s comments are a reminder of what Celtic can still offer ambitious players.

The club provides exposure, but more importantly it provides an environment where winning is expected every week. Judging by Trusty’s own words, that mindset helped carry him all the way to the 2026 World Cup.
