Celtic have lost out to Barcelona for Dutch starlet Xavier Mbuyamba, according to reports.

FOK.nl report that the Catalan side have beaten a whole host of other European giants too.

The Hoops are on the look out for defenders in order to rebuild the backline.

Mbuyamba would have been a coup for Neil Lennon due to the competition for his signature.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

He joined in 2012 in the youth team and worked his way up through the ranks.

After 11 first team appearances last season, Mbuyamba’s name resonated across Europe despite a 12th place finish in the Dutch second tier.

Chelsea were reportedly favourites to capture Mbuyamba but Barcelona made him their fourth Dutch signing of the season.

The six foot five stopper is going to go straight into the Barca development set-up.

However, with Celtic there is more of a chance of first-team minutes.

It’s unknown how far Celtic’s interest was in the promising youth, but to be beaten by Barcelona just shows how highly he is rated.

Celtic fans can take heart that the scouting network are going in the right direction.

The transfer department is taking a hit this window but this one goes into the positive pile.

Celtic taking gamble on future defenders

The Hoops have a few centre-backs at their disposal. Unfortunately, the quality in depth isn’t there hence fielding scouts around Europe.

Perhaps the possible acquisition of Mbuyamba was to compensate for his loss.

If Lennon and co are going to bring more senior defenders in, is playing time guaranteed? It’s a competitive three between Jozo Simunovic, Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien.

Unless Simunovic or Ajer is going to leave then it’ll be hard for a newbie to settle in.

Celtic may have to shut up shop when it comes to bringing in another stopper or waste more money.
