Braga manager Carlos Carvalhal may have a better knowledge of Scottish football than anyone realises as he prepares to face Rangers in the UEFA Europa League tonight.

In fact, Carvalhal is very well acquainted with Celtic in particular after his spell as manager of Sheffield Wednesday.

Celtic-supporting midfielder Barry Bannan has shared that Carvalhal very much enjoyed the unit of Bhoys-aligned players at the Owls when he was boss of the then English Championship side.

And Bannan has told the Braga boss to make sure he wins the quarter-final tie!

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, he said: “When Rangers came out I just told him he needed to make sure he won! He actually loves Scottish football. We had a big Scottish contingent when he was manager and I think he liked our mentality.

“We had Steven Fletcher, Ross Wallace, Liam Palmer as well as guys like Gary Hooper and Aiden McGeady who played up the road. He loved working with us because we hated losing.

“He’d also talk to us about Celtic as he knew we were Celtic supporters. We were winning a lot of leagues back then so we were always happy. He’d ask us about the club and why we supported them.

“But he’s very knowledgeable about the whole of Scottish football as he’d clued up on all the different countries and not just Portugal.”

Carvalhal was at the derby match on Sunday as Celtic took apart Rangers at Ibrox, so perhaps he’s learned a couple of ways to get at Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

At the very least, it certainly sounds like he won’t be naive to what Scottish football is all about in his quest for a victory.
