Barry Ferguson responds to ‘cheeky’ suggestion of Celtic signing nephew Lewis

Lewis Ferguson’s winless run against Celtic continued on Thursday.

In 16 attempts during his days at Hamilton and Aberdeen, he never came out on the winning side, despite scoring seven goals across those games.

Now at Bologna, Ferguson captained the Italian side against Martin O’Neill’s Celts, coming back from 2-0 down but only managing a draw, despite the visitors playing much of the game with ten players.

Ferguson, whose dad Derek and uncle Barry are both prominent Rangers figures, was named midfielder of the year in Serie A in the 2023-24 season.

He hasn’t hit those heights in the 18 months since – so could a loan return to Scotland be on the cards?

Barry Ferguson on Lewis Ferguson joining Celtic

It would be no surprise at all to see Ferguson playing for Rangers one day.

But one caller on a radio phone-in was curious to hear his uncle’s thoughts on him potentially moving to Celtic…

On the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson was asked by a Celtic-supporting caller about the immediate transfer plans for his nephew, who has been seen on the bench more often in recent weeks.

He said: “I don’t know what Lewis’ thoughts are, Lewis is his own guy.

“I think there will be a fair bit of interest in him, if I’m being honest with you. I think a lot of clubs will look and think ‘he’s not playing’ and ‘what is the reason’.

“I have watched Bologna a few times, he has not been at top form but he has still been good.

“He was out for eight or nine months with a cruciate, so you have got to remember that as well, but he is fully fit and he is ready to go. I’m sure a lot of clubs will be looking.”

The caller then suggested a “cheeky loan move to Celtic”, to which Ferguson responded: “Aye, a wee cheeky loan move to Rangers would be nice.”

Ferguson (junior) is under contract until 2028 at the Italian side, and has also been linked with Inter Milan.

Midfielders (actually) linked with Celtic

The suggestion put to Ferguson is, of course, cloud cuckoo land stuff – but the Hoops could do with a midfielder, so who has actually been linked this month?

Celtic reportedly like Josh Mulligan of Hibs, but they aren’t alone in that. The 23-year-old has been compared to John McGinn, and can also operate at right-back.

David Watson of Kilmarnock has also reportedly been considered, but he could follow Ferguson to Italy, being linked with a sensational move to Lazio.

Celtic have made contact with Ridwan Popoola of Kisvarda, with his side rejecting multiple seven-figure bids from Europe already this month.
