You can still hear the roar as Daizen Maeda’s winning penalty hit the back of the net at Hampden.

It’s a moment Celtic fans will cherish for a long time, not only have they beaten Rangers in a cup final – for the second time in 2024 – but what a way to do it.

The game itself wasn’t great for the heart – whichever side you were on – especially the second half because it exploded into chaos.

The only thing probably missing from the match was a red card as Celtic secured a deserved penalty shootout victory over Rangers.

Unlike the Premiership games, the stands were split 50/50 of Celtic and Rangers supporters, with people coming far and wide to watch one of the great rivalries in sport.

Sitting in the Rangers end, Barry Ferguson watched as the game tussled one way and then another, before the rightful winners lifted the trophy and he was honest in expressing how he felt.

Barry Ferguson admits his emotions were ‘all over the place’ as Celtic beat Rangers

The victory is probably sweeter for Celtic supporters because they fell a goal behind and weren’t at their best, especially in the first half.

Yet still, three goals were scored, including Maeda playing a crucial role, with Ferguson admitting that it was a difficult watch for him, as he told Go Radio.

The former midfielder stated that his emotions were ‘all over the place’ and, in the end, it was a ‘sore one’ to take.

“I was at the game, sitting in the stands with the supporters, my emotions during the game were all over the place,” said Ferguson. “Up and down like a yo-yo.

“It wasn’t a great football game, but I thought there were plenty of good tackles. Both sets of players handled the occasion very well. Six goals in a cup final. Into penalties. It was good to be in the stadium.

“But obviously, it was a sore one to end it.”

Modest Daizen Maeda’s reaction to Celtic League Cup final win

There isn’t a more popular player at Celtic right now than Maeda.

His stock continues to rise because he is having an outstanding season, on top of his performances from the previous campaign.

These last 12 months have been sensational for the player and, in typical fashion, he was very modest when reacting to the win on Instagram.

‘Thank you for your wonderful support,’ wrote Maeda, as he held the League Cup trophy in hand.
