Former Celtic midfielder Barry Robson will continue in his role of interim boss at Aberdeen ahead of the Dons trip to Parkhead this weekend.

It has been a disappointing few months for the Pittodrie side, who have struggled for form since the return from the World Cup.

Recent defeats against Hearts, Darvel and Hibernian saw Jim Goodwin lose his managerial role after just under a year in charge.

Ex-Celtic midfielder and Aberdeen youth coach Barry Robson was tasked with leading the club in interim charge as they aim to appoint a new permanent manager.

The former Scotland international has overseen two Dons fixtures as temporary boss, suffering a 3-1 defeat to St Mirren before picking up the club’s first victory since early January against Motherwell.

After exiting the Scottish Cup at the Fourth Round stage, Aberdeen have had a week away from action, and many were wondering if we would see a new manager in place during that period.

Next up for the Pittodrie side in the Scottish Premiership is a trip to take on Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side, which isn’t the ideal fixture to head into without a manager.

However, following two disappointing managerial spells for Goodwin and previously Stephen Glass, Aberdeen appear keen to take their time over the next appointment.

The club’s chairman, Dave Cormack, released a statement earlier today, delivering an update to supporters about the recruitment process of the next boss.

Cormack confirmed that it is important the club are patient, and incoming chief executive Alan Burrows will play a part in that process when he begins his role on the 27th of February.

He also stated that Barry Robson will continue to lead the first team as they prepare to travel to Parkhead for Saturday’s fixture.

The statement read [Aberdeen FC]: “Aberdeen FC’s recruitment for a new manager is progressing with potential candidates being considered against the detailed criteria and philosophy the Club has set out.

“There has been a high level of interest as well as some unfounded speculation. It is vital that we carry out the necessary diligence in drawing up a shortlist before embarking on any serious talks or interviews.

“Alan Burrows, who starts as chief executive on 27th February, will be involved in the next steps. It’s important that we take our time and be patient.

“In the meantime, Barry Robson, supported by Steve Agnew and Scott Anderson, will continue to lead the first team, and they are wholly focused on preparations for Saturday’s match.”

Former Celtic midfielder all set for Paradise return in Aberdeen dugout.

Whilst there isn’t official confirmation of how many games Barry Robson will be in charge of the Aberdeen squad for, with Burrows beginning his role later this month, he is all set for a Parkhead return – this time as Dons interim boss.

The 44-year-old had a memorable two-year spell with the Hoops, scoring with his first touch of the ball against his current employers. He also had his fair share of memorable moments in derby fixtures too.

During his time at Paradise, the midfielder picked up two trophies, winning the Scottish Premiership and League Cup. His only other trophy in his career would come at Pittodrie, once again lifting the League Cup in 2014.

So the former Dundee United man has history at both clubs, particularly when you consider he has been part of the academy set up in Aberdeen for several years now.

Ange Postecoglou and his players go into this one on fine form, facing an Aberdeen side that will have been damaged after such a poor run of form in recent months.

But Robson will be wanting to build upon his victory against Motherwell two weeks ago, and a good performance would do his chances of getting the job permanently no harm.
