Barry Robson tipped for permanent Aberdeen role; former Celt continues to impress after Rangers win

Former Celtic midfielder, Barry Robson has certainly been grabbing the headlines since taking over the interim manager position at Aberdeen.

Robson took over after Jim Goodwin was sacked for disastrous results against Darvel in the Scottish cup and for losing 6-0 to Hibs earlier in the season, leaving Aberdeen in the bottom half of the table.

But since Robson took over, the Dons have only lost two games in ten, one against Celtic, and that form has seen him take his side to third in the league with the potential to qualify for Europe.

And after his brilliant 2-0 win over Rangers at the weekend, when asked if Aberdeen could potentially get someone better for the role, former Dons defender Russell Anderson was straightforward with his answer.

Speaking on the BBC Scottish Football podcast, Anderson said, “I don’t think so. Personally, I think Barry deserves a chance.

“Ultimately, that’s their decision to make who they go for. I do wonder who out there would be better.

“I mean, Barry’s interview process has lasted the last eight weeks, isn’t it? And I think he’s demonstrated more than what you can do in an interview in a boardroom what he’s capable of.

“So I would find it very difficult to think that they wouldn’t give him the job. And if that’s the case, I don’t see why you would necessarily delay doing it.

“I mean, he is still relatively untested. But I think you can only go on what he’s done so far. And like I say, you remember how far they had fallen prior to Barry coming in.

“I think he deserves an awful lot of credit for what he’s done.”

I think it’s fair to say that Robson’s appointment must have raised a few eyebrows due to his lack of experience.

Aberdeen looked like they needed a manager that’s been there and done it to get them out of a potential relegation dog fight but Robson has done brilliantly to turn their fortunes around.

Will Robson get the job permanently? I think if Dave Cormack hadn’t had his fingers burned with Stephen Glass and Jim Goodwin he would have already been appointed.

He does deserve his chance and I’m sure after this season if Aberdeen don’t give him it, another club certainly will.
