Celtic’s battling display to earn a point in Lille has helped put Scottish football on the verge of a notable Champions League achievement.

According to Dale Johnson of ESPN, the results by Scottish teams in Europe on Thursday night – Celtic’s draw, and Rangers’ victory – have moved Scotland up to 11th place in the coefficient table. Should Scotland finish in 11th place, the winners of the league next season would qualify automatically for the Champions League group stages in 2022-23.

However, he does also mention that the Ukraine could still overtake Scotland. Therefore, it is vital that the Scottish clubs reach the last 32 of the Europa League.

What a boost it would be for the Hoops if the team didn’t have to deal with the qualifying process of the Champions League for at least one season.

Celtic have tripped up in those qualifying rounds in the past three seasons. That is not a situation that anyone at the club will want to see repeated any time soon.

At the moment Celtic need to play four qualifying rounds before reaching the group stages of the Champions League. That is a difficult process to navigate. It is not that surprising that the Hoops have found it tough to reach the group stages, even though Celtic are in the Champions route.

Finances would be boosted by automatic qualification

There would be much less pressure put on the side early in the season if Champions League qualification was guaranteed. It would also help with Celtic’s transfer budget.

The club would automatically get the money for reaching the group stages. Therefore, it would not need to sell any key players to make up the shortfall.

Maybe some Celtic fans were not convinced by the importance of the Europa League this season with 10 in a row on the line. However, if the Hoops can all but guarantee the chance of automatic Champions League group stage football by qualifying for the last 32 of the Europa League, then Europe becomes very important this season.
