As Celtic prepare to face Motherwell this afternoon at Fir Park, Brendan Rodgers knows that he must claim all three points to replace Aberdeen at the top of the league.

The Dons left it late last night as they defeated Dundee United 1-0 to go three points clear of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership table and nine ahead of Rangers who sit third.

As Celtic look to beat The Steelmen and Rangers aim to close their own gap, BBC pundit Stephen Thompson was asked if Rangers can challenge Celtic for the title and how the Ibrox squad compares to Aberdeen’s.

Stephen Thompson admits Rangers ‘won’t beat’ Celtic to the title

Thompson told The Scottish Football podcast, “Well, to answer your first question, I don’t think that they’ll beat Celtic to win the league. And that’s not just based on the first nine games. I think Celtic have got far more strength and depth.

“Rangers have got players to come back that will no doubt help strengthen the squad as a whole, but Celtic are a better team, I think for me that’s fairly plain to see. Rangers’ next problem is Aberdeen.

“Obviously, they have started the season incredibly well, so they’re going to have to try and compete with Aberdeen. That’s why next Wednesday’s game becomes huge.”

How Celtic take pressure off Rangers by beating Motherwell

Celtic have their own mission ahead of them as they look to reclaim the top spot from Aberdeen in the league.

But in doing so, they could also do Rangers a huge favour in terms of league positioning this afternoon.

Looking at the table as it stands, if Celtic beat Motherwell, it means that Rangers will keep third spot in the league even if St Mirren win at Ibrox.

Granted, goal difference also has a part to play but the Ibrox club are in danger of not just fighting for second place, they also have a battle on their hands to keep a hold of staying third with Dundee United and Motherwell both breathing down their neck.

This season is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent history but for Rangers, it has the potential of being one of the most embarrassing.
