BBC man backs Celtic clear-out; coaching staff and players at risk

Former Celtic goalkeeper Packie Bonner reckons there could be a clear-out at the club following today’s defeat to Rangers.

The Bhoys are now a massive 19 points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders, albeit with three games in hand.

Even if Celtic win all three of those, it still feels unlikely that the Ibrox side will drop a further ten points across 16 matches.

Today’s result could be a watershed moment for the club.

Bonner reckons massive upheaval is on the way.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland today (14:54), he said: “Celtic need to look to the future and they need to make a lot of changes.

“They may have to look very closely at the management and there are some players they have to move out quickly – some that have been brought in not too long ago.”

Celtic recruitment called into question

Bonner is clearly not happy with the current direction of the club, and who can blame him?

I’m not either.

The time for short-term thinking at the club has come and gone. Changing the manager overnight is not going to change the direction of our season.

Celtic now need to look further ahead than this season and consider what the club should look like for the next five years, rather than the next five months.

Signings over the last 18 months such as Shane Duffy, and others, have proven to be poor. Recruitment wasn’t completed in time for European qualifiers again. The failure to look for an elite successor to Brendan Rodgers was unacceptable.

We’ll always have the second Celtic nine-in-a-row and the Quadruple Treble.

What do Celtic want to achieve now? That’s the question everyone should be asking themselves inside the club.

This title race looks gone, but it’s never too late to plan for the future.

In other news, Leigh Griffiths is refusing to give up on the ten-in-a-row dream.
