The BBC are set to air the meeting between Celtic and Spartans this weekend.

One of two SWPL clashes to air on the national broadcaster, Celtic’s match will be available online. Fran Alonso’s side are set to travel to Ainslie Park in Edinburgh, hoping to build on a dismantling of Hearts last weekend. The women’s game in Scotland has received increased exposure since the World Cup in 2019. Scotland famously made the finals of the tournament for the first time, with stars like Kim Little and Erin Cuthbert leading the way.

Celtic’s stars will be hoping to emulate some big names on the world stage. For now, though, it’s all about league action. Alonso’s side sit 3rd, but have plenty of time to make up ground on Rangers and Glasgow City above them [SWPL].

Celtic youngster hoping to make impression on BBC

In the men’s team, we’ve seen youngster Conor Hazard make an impact for Celtic this season. For the women, it’s an even younger goalkeeper who’s hoping to make a mark. Rachael Johnstone may just be in her teens, but her impressive display against Hearts won her plaudits.

Keeping a clean sheet in only her second competitive start, it’s been a quick upturn of fortunes for Johnstone. She told Celtic FC Women’s website [Celtic FC Women]:

“I’m ecstatic – I’m so grateful to get the opportunity to play in this team and it’s even better when you come away with a clean sheet, so I’m very happy.

“I feel ready when the chances come. I work hard at training so when the opportunity comes I’m ready – I’m always excited as well, and have a bit of nerves, but they’re good nerves.”

Emphasising her friendship with Celtic’s no.1 Chloe Logan, Johnstone added [Celtic FC Women]:

“It’s so important to have that relationship. We push each other on, and we have a laugh but it’s still serious, so we can get a good training session while enjoying ourselves and Chloe’s an amazing keeper so I’m learning so much from her every day and I’m really lucky to have her as that kind of mentor.”

You can watch Spartans against Celtic at Ainslie Park from 1.55pm on Sunday online on the BBC.
