The Match of the Day Twitter account had a little bit of fun earlier as Celtic attacker Daizen Maeda netted at the World Cup.
As you will surely have seen by now, the Hoops forward scored Japan’s opener in their excruciating penalty loss to Josip Juranovic’s Croatia.
Maeda had been a major talking point during the BBC’s live coverage of the match, and that extended to Twitter where the BBC run account got involved.
At that point, Maeda had a huge smile on his face, although the evening would end with him having tears in his eyes and being consoled by Hoops team-mate Juranovic.
Despite the sad ending for Maeda and Japan, he did at least end a 16 year wait for a current Celtic player to score at a World Cup.
The last player to do so had also been wearing the blue of Japan – Shunsuke Nakamura in a 3-1 loss to Australia in 2006.
Georgios Samaras did net a memorable goal during the 2014 edition, but he had just played his final game for Celtic.
So chin up Daizen, keep going Josip, and well done Match of the Day for remembering who’s always on top.
